While it is easy to be discriminated against at work, it is just as easy to fight back against those responsible. In some cases, you may be entitled to compensation for the illegal activity you were subjected to. What is Discrimination at Work? How do you know if you are being discriminated against at work? First, you need to make sure that you are a protected class in the workplace and that your employer is a covered employer under the Civil Rights Act of 1964. As an employee, you may be protected against discrimination based on your race, gender, religion or disability. Discrimination is anything that may create a hostile workplace such as crude jokes made about you, sexual advances being made toward you or any decision made about your employment based on anything other than prior work performance. How to Report Discrimination at Work The first step toward stopping workplace discrimination is to report it to someone whom your trust in the company. This does not have to be your immediate supervisor. It merely needs to be someone you trust to investigate the claim in a fair and unbiased manner. This could mean that you talk to an HR representative, another employee within the company or a supervisor in another department. If there is no one in the company that you can trust, it may be a good idea to contact an attorney and check with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) to inquire about legal action. How Work Discrimination Laws Apply to Your Case A work discrimination lawsuit is generally the last resort in such a case. First, you must show that you reported the incident and that nothing was done to remedy the problem. Alternatively, you could show that reporting the incident would have led to nothing being done to resolve the issue. Normally, you will contact the EEOC to ask that they investigate your claim for you. They will generally try to resolve the issue through negotiation and other informal settlement options. If it looks like such negotiations wont result in a resolution, you may be given the approval to file a lawsuit. Depending on where the discrimination took place and whether state or federal laws were broken, your case will be assigned to a state or federal judge. At any point before going to trial, you may settle the case with your employer. As part of a settlement, you may get your job back and get full benefits as if you never were terminated in the first place. Your attorney may help you with negotiations to ensure that you get a favorable resolution to your case. How to Deal With Discrimination at Work Being discriminated at work can be a mentally challenging experience. This is especially true if the person committing the illegal activity is your boss or another supervisor within the company. During the investigation, your boss and others may try to label you as difficult or say that you were to blame for what happened. You should also know that you may be forced to work with or close to the person who was acting in an illegal manner during the investigation. Therefore, you need to simply come to work, do your job and then go home at the end of the day. If you listen to the workplace gossip or try to read too much into what happens after your claim is submitted, you will go crazy. The most important thing though is that you spoke up. That is a victory in itself, and even if you are fired, leaving a company that would mistreat you isnt the end of the world. Being the victim of discrimination is not something that you want to go through. However, if you are a victim, know your rights and take action. Allowing your employer to treat you like something less than a person may embolden those committing the acts to keep on mistreating people. Example 1: There are 85 chocolates in a box. How many chocolates will each kid receive if they were to be divided equally between 6 children? Solution: Total number of chocolates in a box = 85. Number of children = 6. Number of chocolates per kid = Total chocolates / Number of children. Therefore, each of them will receive= 85 / 6 = 85 6. Remainder = 1; Quotient = 14. Hence, each of them will be receive 14 chocolates. Question: Multiple choice question (Pick the correct option.) What is the remainder when 726 is divided by 7? a) 3 b) 4 c) 5 d) None of these. Correct answer: option c. The first digit is equal to 7. Start with the first digit. Divide the hundreds. Use 7 x 1 = 7. Subtract 7 7 = 0. Now bring the tens place down. Divide the tens. Use 7 x 0 = 0. Subtract 2 0 = 2. Now bring down the ones place. Divide the ones. Use 7 x 3 = 21. Subtract 26 21 = 5. Hence remainder = 5.

LSAT Tip of the Week Analytical Reasoning Practice Problem #1 LSAT Law School Blog This week, we will focus on an example of how to setup an analytical reasoning (logic games) question. Our practice question will be from the June 2007 LSAT. This is Section 1, Question 1: A company employee generates a series of five-digit product codes in accordance with the following rules: The codes use the digits 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4, and no others. Each digit occurs exactly once in any code. The second digit has a value exactly twice that of the first digit. The value of the third digit is less than the value of the fifth digit. Rule 1 - First, we will diagram this question by pulling out each rule we are given. The first one states that it is a five-digit code, so we will make 5 blank spaces. __ __ __ __ __ Rule 2 - Next, we are told that these digits only use the digits 0-4 and no others. 0 1 2 3 4 Rule 3 - Then we are told each digit occurs only one time. 0 1 2 3 4 1 1 1 1 1 Rule 4 - The next rule is that the second digit has a value exactly twice that of the first digit, so: x 2x _ _ _ : From this rule we can infer that there are only two possibilities once this rule is considered, either: 1 2 _ _ _ OR 2 4 _ _ _ Rule 5 - Our final rule is that the value of the third digit is less than the value of the fifth digit. From this we infer that the number “4” cannot be in space 3 and the number “0” cannot be in space 5. Once you diagram it always is smart to make a few scenario possibilities with all the rules taken into account. So, we have: #1: 1 2 0/3 _ 3/4 â€" This is compiling all the rules since we know the second number has to be twice the first, which works here with 1 2. It also takes into account that the third digit fifth digit â€" and we only have the numbers 0, 3, and 4 left so this means that spots 3 and 5 will either be 0 3, 0 4, or 3 4. #2: 2 4 0/1 _ 1/3 â€" Again, we are compiling all the rules since we know second number is twice the first, which works with 2 4. With the rules down and the two scenarios already figured out, you will probably be able to already answer a question or two. Let’s try the first one together just to see how we will implement what we have diagrammed. Question 1: If the last digit of an acceptable product code is 1, it must be true that the (A) first digit is 2 (B) second digit is 0 (C) third digit is 3 (D) fourth digit is 4 (E) fourth digit is 0 This is a “must be true” question and we must implement all of our previously stated rules in addition to the new one we are given, that the last digit has to be 1. Since we diagrammed and made example scenarios, this will be a piece of cake. We will use Scenario #2 here: #2: 2 4 0/1 _ 1/3 Our new rule is that digit 5 must be 1, so: 2 4 0/1 _ 1 Since each digit can only be used once (Rule # 3), we know that the third digit will have to be 0, and the only digit left for digit 4 is a 3- so we have our final code: 2 4 0 3 1. Now answering the question will be simple, we will just run through each answer choice and see which was holds to be true with the code we have created. Option (a) states that the first digit is 2, which is correct! I have become accustomed to probing questions regarding my relationships with my students both inside and outside the confines of the gym. One of the most frequent questions I am asked is, “What is the most important part of being a one to one personal trainer?”In fact, just the other night during a meal my wife arranged, her friend asked me this exact question.I was initially reluctant to attend the dinner because of how it could disrupt my current diet plan. I was now even more reluctant to answer questions regarding work during my out of office hours…Finding time to formulate an educated response, I decided to savour my mouthful of ‘spaghetti al forno’ for a little longer. “I will get back to you on that”, I said.The shock was almost instantaneous. The chance to indulge in intriguing conversation had passed. I had never been able to formulate a response because in all honesty I cannot articulate the different methodologies I use in the gym. I also cannot put these methodologies into a hierarchy of importance. Each client is different, so I too have to be different at least 7 times a day. I couldn’t sum that up into one sentence without sounding arrogant. However, after having time to think about the question and the expansive nature of the answer I could not so eloquently explain, I now have a response.During this article I will be drawing on influence from my own experiences as a one to one Personal Trainer and how they can be directly related to the work of any one to one tutor.So, for the husband of my wife's friend, and for you, here is my answer to “what is the most important part of being a one to one tutor?”You must recognise that each student is an individual. This to me was one of the biggest realisations that I had when first beginning my career as a fitness coach. This is important because it will help you to understand the amount of work you actually have to do.In my case, I had to create individual fitness plans, individual diet plans, individual personalities, fitness goals, anatomies and be able to understand different strengths and weaknesses for each client. For example, if you are a guitar tutor, one student may have a goal to learn how to play fast, rock music, whilst another may be more focussed on classical acoustic. Despite the similarities in teaching basic techniques and musical theory, at a point you must be able to provide individualised learning plans for each student. You will be required to juggle this information on a constant basis. As their tutor, your students will always look to you for guidance, advice and confirmation.Understand that time is of the essence during a session. Having a solid understanding of the time each activity will take is very important. Because a client pays you per hour or per session, they will expect to be put through their paces. You want your clients to leave a session feeling that they are progressing and achieving their goals. If you spend too long on one aspect, instead of practicing it over multiple sessions, they may feel unfulfilled. While I also recommend that you build a good rapport with your clients don’t make chit-chat the backbone of your sessions. You want to balance it nicely. I speak to my clients all the way through a session because it makes exercise much easier for them by taking the focus off the strain on their body.However, I will talk to them only during exercise. You need to structure your sessions so that your client is always active and engaged. If they are not they will move on to another tutor who optimises their time within sessions. However, this brings me onto my next point... Build a good rapport with your clients. While I think it is more important to create engaging and active lessons, I also think it is just as important to buil d a good rapport. You can have a good professional rapport with your clients and it is good that you and your client have a mutual understanding of what you both want out of your sessions. However, you don’t want to be a robot.Why do business spend so much time picking a face to promote their latest product or service? It is because a face humanises the artificial nature of a company's strategy. You are the service and you can define how your clients deem this service through your rapport. Being a one to one tutor requires a lot of communication. If you communicate effectively you will see the positive effect it has on your reputation and services.Building a good lesson plan is integralThroughout your career as a tutor you will be tasked with developing a multitude of lesson plans, revision plans and session structures. You will have to cater these to either individuals or groups. There are many things that you have to take into account including which aspects of your subject you want to teach, what the client aims to learn and how to make it as engaging as possible.Below I have shared an easy to follow guide on how to create and structure individual plans during your time as a one-to-one tutor. Use this example as a basis for your own students while not forgetting the other points I made beforehand. Assess your clients' learning levelThere are a number of ways that you can assess your client’s current level of understanding. For example, as a one to one personal trainer I have to understand the limits of my client’s fitness. It is only from there that I can develop a tailored lesson plan. When I first meet a newly assigned student, I seek to understand three things:What experience my client already has?What they want to learn as a student?What they expect out of me as a tutor?By asking these three questions you are able to create a conduit of communication and, most importantly, mutual understanding. It makes the process much easier and removes the ini tial awkwardness prevalent between a teacher and a new student. This can potentially hold even more true for language tutors who have to break the first barrier of communication.My belief is it is best to meet up and talk one to one with a student because you are going to be meeting one to one for the remainder of your classes. However, other tutors prefer to develop digital questionnaires or survey’s to find out the same amount of information. Test your client’s current practical levelSome tutors call this an induction. In many senses it is. It’s important to test the waters and see whether the client is comfortable. You also need to see if the student is capable and where your student’s starting point should be. As a Personal Trainer I make sure any new clients go through a standardised fitness test. This gives me the opportunity to understand the client’s current limitations. From here on I can create a loose structure that aims to push these limitations. As a guitar tu tor you may ask your student to play a basic chord transition. You could ask them to play from G to B in a basic four beat rhythm. If they can easily do this you could ask them to play G to B and then to C. If your clients can’t complete this you know to start with the C chord. It is the same for anything else.However, you need to make sure you celebrate an accomplishment of a student. This does not require you to lie. It requires you to be a motivator. Anyone likes to be commended and your clients are no different. Be constructive with your criticism but celebrate a clients step in the right directionWork out your client’s goalsOnce you have figured out the limits of your student’s knowledge for your subject you can begin to initiate a plan that sets an achievable pace for your client. To develop a further understanding you should ask your student specific questions such as:What are your goals?What do you want out of this program?Is it achievable?Find more in-depth answers by asking deeper questions? Some questions to consider include:Do you want to lose five pounds this month?Do you want to develop a creative or journalistic writing style?What are 5 songs you want to learn to play?This additional information will support you when structuring the perfect plan for your students.This is just a short plan that will help you develop a key understanding of your client, allowing you to create plans just for them. The more practice your client has and the more your student’s knowledge improves, the more you can implement.
